How to keep your eyes healthy?

1. Sunglasses are recommended from childhood. They protect you from ultraviolet light and may decrease your chances of having cataracts and macular degeneration, which can cause blindness. They also decrease the risk of eyelid tumors and pterygium.

2. Avoid smoking. Smoking is a risk factor for the development of cataracts and macular degeneration. It also aggravates thyroid-related eye disease.

3. Wear safety goggles at industrial plants, whether you are working or just passing by.

4. If hammering or screw driving, use protective eyewear.

5. Safety goggles made of polycarbonate are imperative for people with only one eye.

6. Do not watch the sun.

7. Do not weld or watch welding without a protective mask.

8. Keep children away from sharp objects (such as pens, pencils, etc.), any explosives, and household agents.

9. Use proper safety goggles or masks in sports activities.

10. Reading glasses should be used for this purpose only.

11. Do not use eye drops unless given to you by your eye doctor.

12. Keep your eye drops separate from other materials (see also Precautions concerning the use of eye drops).

13. A routine eye examination is important, especially over the age of 40. Have a routine eye examination by your eye doctor (ophthalmologist) at least every 6 months over the age of 40 and at least every 5 years under the age of 40 (see visits with other physicians: When to be seen by your physician).

14. Always keep up with your eye doctor's orders and follow-ups. Most complications occur in patients who do not follow their eye doctor's orders and follow-ups.
